Herbie Newell – Can adoption make abortion obsolete?

Herbie Newell
is the President of Lifeline Children’s Services. He joins us to discuss the role adoption can play in problem pregnancy.

Because adoption is legal and widely available, Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett argued in the Dobbs case that abortion is not needed in any case. Herbie provides details as to how adoption can be the true choice. He says we need to:

  • Change the language away from “give up” your baby or “give away” a baby for adoption.
  • Realize that placing a child for adoption is not a callous choice, but a loving choice
  • Support open adoption and other innovations allow birth parents to remain involved in the lives of their children after placing in an adoptive family; kinship and interim care can provide breathing room to help a woman make a parenting plan
  • Realize church can play a key role in helping women choose life if they are not in a position to parent at the time of birth.
  • Envision the hundreds of thousands of state-created orphans in the foster care system as a priority mission field for the church.

Lifeline offers Maternity Services, Adoption Services, Foster Care Services, Global Orphan Care, and Counseling and Education for parents, churches and community groups.
